Damon Frost Interview by Paul Skee

StreetDanceMag – Every song has its place

Yes indeed. I would like to say a few words about songs. Where they belong, about different categories and whats my approach to playing songs for preselections, battles or parties.

Lets start with categories. There are few ways how i categories my songs. First is genre of course, then we have purpose of the song and the last is wheather the song is for the preselection or for battles. Everybody knows what genre is so i just add, that just becose you hear song in hip hop, house, poppin or what every style battle, it doesnt mean, the song is from the same genre. If i play realy colorful interesting and advanced for example dubstep song for poppin, it doenst mean that this song is funk, gfunk, or ment to be poppin. Sometimes i try to challenge dancers to dance to song which are not from the genre of the battle but you can dance to it or even better you can visualize it. This applies to all other categories. StreetDanceMag – A Dj is not a DJ

Im gonna be realy honest with you guys right now. I was talking and talking about who is a DJ and whos not a lot of times but this time i want to make it clear for the last time. The definition of Dj is known, its in every wikipedia or any other dictionary. I just want to tell that if you buy laptop and turntables/cdplayers/console, youre not right away a dj (and i dont even want to start talking about having a mixtape, when you are not actualy a real living DJ). StreetDanceMag – Showcase

There is a lot of competinionts in which you have to do or make a show (choreography) to continue to the battles. And there is lot of common mistakes, that i personaly think you should avoid when your building up your choreography with your crew. im gonna break it donw to few simple point.

  1. whats the point of your show?

There are two ways how to build up a choreography for a showcase. One is to entertain audiance so youll create a scenerio and express it thru your dancing or better yet, dancing and acting if you have the level. For example, pick a sily song and do the show as if youre student in high school like soul sweat did with their playground showcase. This way could be realy interessting for all the people. The other way Continue reading

INNERVIEW is project which wants to show people, in hip hop culture, personalities of known artists. Sometimes, people know only nick name of the artist and judge him only by its artist character. Thru 10 same questions i want to reveal their personalities to everybody who doesn’t have that chance to get closer.

Message to dance “teachers”

This article is actually my friends Ill Kosby status on FB. I know not everybody is FB friend with him so now you have the opportunity to read what he wrote. Ill Kosby is collage professor and real hip hop educator. Author of the documentary Everything Remains Raw.

What has happened to quality in hip-hop dance education? Where has it gone? Was it ever there to begin with? I remember when my cousin tried to write graffiti by drawing a finished product, I told him you have to learn letter construction first and work from there. I’ve seen many of these classes, from both the hip hop community and the “commercial choreographic” perspective and my thoughts are Continue reading

Second innerview guest is raes partner Flockey. This german dancer, originally from Kongo (Africa) answered all my questions and now you have the opportunity to get to know him better. I hope you will like it. Im sorry for the bad quality of sound sometimes,  because we were shooting it in backstage, while the actual event (Flavourama – Austria) was starting .

Thru 10 same questions i want to reveal their personalities to everybody who doesn’t have that chance to get closer.

First guest is german funky man Sugar Rae. We met at flavourama battle in austria – salzburg and recorded it in tinny room for staff. He was my first interview so i was little bit nervous but after second question everything was just fine. He opened his hearth for you and that was my point.

I shoot everything on my iPhone 4 with cliff stand and tripod. I don’t have any external mic yet, but ill try to get one for better sound. I choose all the guests and i will try to interview anybody i meet on my travels. So the regularity depends on my journeys, be patient.

If you like it, tell me and if you don’t, tell me either. I want to know your feelings and reactions.

M.O.P. T.O.P. on the mic
